Artist talks.
Abby drum.
She studied jewellery design at Lufbra University and comment on how much it had help get contacts in her chosen filed, but that in the beginning it was hard because there was a lot of work and the fact that she had moved into student accommodation, but even with all that it was wroth going to University.
After graduating she has been doing a lot of commission work, and has also done some volunteer work to try and get more of her work out there and get her name better none, she is currently working on a project on making jewellery based on old medical technical, and medical equipment,
After listening to Abby’s talk, I think University would be good for me because it’ll be hard work but it’ll be a good experience for me and it’ll help me get contacts in the filed I want.
Polly Shave
She studied photography at Northamber University and side that she enjoyed University after she had got used to it and had got used to working on her on and living in the student accommodation. She did say that she hadn’t decided exactly what she wanted to do until the last minuet which made me feel better because I’m not 100% sure what filed of photography I want to go into,
She has also done volunteer work after University, and also did photography work shops to spared her name around and get more people to no her name, she all so became a member of the north staffs photography association. She also put on several expiation of her work which have sold her work made her name more well none to some art collectors.
She specialise in camera less photograph/photograms, her currant project is to portray the human body on a molecule scale, by portraying the inside of the body using the out side.
Listening to this talk again gave me an idea of how much work will be involved in going to University but I still think it’ll work for be and will help build my independents. And that wile still in University and after you have to push your self forward a lot and do a lot to get work.
Clear Bates
Started by doing 3 year at Newcastle College doing an art and design cores, then went to university studying the same subject, but she did say that she learnt most of what she knows at college.
She set up her own business with only 50 pound and with in about 2 years had 3 shops in Liverpool and sold lots of different items, which where all made, and stocks a lot of different designers, and works with several charity’s and also dose work shops in her shops. And she has done work working on films in the wardrobe department and as an extra
The talk from Clear bates, was good because it informed me that even after going to college and to University it’s still hard to work in you field and you have to be determined to make what ever you have work to your advantage and that you have to be good in your area to be able to get any were.
Susan Cross
Went to Hereford college of art and started on a foundation level cores, but didn’t no exactly what she wanted to do until she had started college, then she went on to do a 4 year cause in university studying jewellery and got an apprenticeship with a cores designer called Martin Adams.
After university she set up a work shop in London and ran it with other jewellers that she had meat from university, and also done some teaching along side doing independent work, whilst teaching she went to Finland on a staff exchange program.
She has also been asked to produce a peace for worshipful company of goldsmiths, which then lead to more commissions, from others like the world gold council.
She has help several exhibitions, she help one in Scotland where she exhibited a large body of work she had produced and also worked and organised an exhibition in 2003 on textiles and invited artists from around the world that she had meant whilst travelling.
A lot of her work is linked to what she did in college and university and she all so takes a lot of inspirations from drawing she dose in museums and from the places she visits
I feel that Susan went on a little bit but it was good because it showed what could be achieved if you work hard and take all the opportunities that you can.
Hannah Stoney
Studied fine art, painting and drawing at university, and all way wanted to own a shop selling art. She dose a lot of work using screen printing, which became based on memory’s, she all so uses a lot of writing in her work, and so thinks it helps to write about it because it helps you think about what it is your actually doing.
She held independent exhibitions while in university, which helped teach her how to put together, an exhibition, and she also had to do an exhibition for university, and also applied for travel awards.
She all so mentioned that it’s important to invite people that are important along like tutors, business people that run gallery’s, and art collectors, because that way you can get more contacts and meet people that can help you in the future.
She did her dissertation on the prise of art and started interviewing artists and gallery owners for their views on it, which also made more contacts. After university she started working front of house and doing expiation's at the Alan Christen Gallery, she got that position because she had interviewed the owner for her dissertation.
Finally she went to Tarentum Gardens gallery, and set up a shop and went back do doing independent work, her shop all so sells her work and other artists work in the shop/gallery, she all so manly stock graduate artist work so that they can have some income.
This talk again showed me that going to university can help a lot with getting a job in your filed in the future, especially if you out going and you go to exhibitions and talk to as many people as you can you will build up more contacts.
Robert hunter
He did a two year diploma in art and design at college which was good because it thought him different skills, his goal at the beginning was to illustrate children’s book, to help get to that goal he entered competitions to wright children’s books, he only came second but this still helped make contacts. He all so doses independent work to try and help get into making children’s book and published a book. He moved into a studio/gallery and work doing screen prints to make independent work, he was asked to produce a comic illustration for a publisher, which then led to them asking him to right and illustrate his own book. He was also asked by a musician to produce a book, which followed the story in the music and would accompany it.
I think Roberts talk was again a little slow but I did show that if you have a goal at the start and stick with it and work at it eventually you’ll be able to get there if you work at it, he did say that work started dropping of because he was changing and wasn’t being consistent with his work, but he stuck with the line he wanted to go down and now he’s there business is getting better.
Brian Griffin
He went to Manchester college and did a diploma in photography, as well as his photography he also works in films and did a lot of band photography and made some music videos, as well as photography he all so studied engineering and became very interested in the technical side of photography.
He takes a lot of his inspiration form old painting and movie posters instead of being inspired by photographers and trying to wok like them, he created a lighting machine that uses water to create a very experimental effect and look to some of his images. And also thinks digital has opened up photography and has made it more interesting
He photographed the people in charge of the Olympics for an exhibition, and helps his own exhibition of a body of work based on the Black Country and his up bringing.
I feel that Brian was the most inspiring speaker we’ve had because he talked about his work more. And he also put across the point that he’s a photographic artist working how he wants, which is how I would like to work when, and if I make it as photographer.
