Final image/evaluation

For this assignment we had to produce one image that shows what I think of when I think about family.
To begin with I was just going to do one item but then decided that it didn't really show what I needed it to, so I added an item for each family member and decided to try and show there main occupation, so for my Dad I have put a camera on because he's photographer, then for my Mum I have put money on because she works with money and in administration, then for my sister I used the paint brush and the colored cloth to represent art, then for my brother I used a graphics pen and a game to try and show that he's studying in games design.
I think the style I have done this image in is good, and personally I really like David Hockney's images, but I do think it's a hard thing to get right and to make look really good, I think I have done alright at it but I don't think it's the best image I have ever done for an assignment, but it was Worth trying just for the experience in doing it, I have tried to do it ones or twice before but never taken much time over it but this time I feel that I have given it a good go.
If I was to do this assignment again I wouldn't do it in the same style, even thought I like it I feel that it's not the right style for me.

quick assignment

For this assignment we need to photograph family, not persificaly a family member we can express what family means to use in a abstract way, so for this I am going to photograph artist materials because all of my family members have done art at some time and it's something I think of when I think of family so I'm going to artist materials like paint brushes or cameras. I'm going to do this in the style of David Hokny but I'm also going to try and add a little bit of something different in there to make it more independent, so I'm going to try and make it look more reall than hkney dose it, to do this I am going to ether use my macro exstetion tubs if I can get enough depther of fild, or my 55mm and if that dosn't get in close enough I'll try my 18-55mm lens, I'll also have to use a tripod to do this because I'll proably get shake while using my macro.

Swansea, three-year BA (Hons) programme

I have looked at several different universities and have decided that Swansea Metropolitans is the one that sounds most interesting at this point in time, because I'm unsure about what I want to go into a hundred persent, from what I read it sounds like this course is designed to develop the students photographic skills and develop, and explore and develop creative skills, and also develop skills in the area you think you want to go into when you finish university.
They also have visiting lectures from other universities that do more that just photography, they have editors and curators to help you get contacts and under stand how photography interacts with the different areas of the industries.
the university also encourages the students to start working in on external projects, where you have to find a client to work with, the tutors will also help you with getting into this area and also help you with contracts and coasting as well as the creative side of the work, and they also help develop marketing and self promotion.

The entry requirements for this course is a National Diploma in a relevant subject, with minimum grades of Merit witch is 240 uCAS points.

inspiration

This is the film poster for The Good The Bad and The Ugly, and it also the cover for the DVD box set, I have chosen this image because it is one of my favorit films, and I have all ways liked western style of films or films set back around that time like Zulu witch isn't set quite back that far but is still around time frame.

This image is a good poster for the film because it's got the three main roles on it with the good at the front then the bad and the ugly at the back, this lay out works well for the poster because you want the mane person at the front and the secondary caricatures at the back, if they had changed the lay out it could have made the poster confessing and not as obvious to who evers is looking at as to who was the main role and the good guy which is what film posters are designed to do.

technically wise this image works well because of the composition of the image with the main role at the very front of the fram and filling it but a little to the right then you have the other two main roles just to the back left behind the main focus of the image, this lay out also works well for the lay out of the text on the image  with it being on his chest, if he was lower then the text would't have fitted in with out covering his face a bit witch would have ruined the image.

I also think that the white back ground works best for this because if they had used perhaps a western style back drop say in the desert or in a town it would have distracted you from the main focus of the image and would have made it have less impacte on the viewer, and the white back drop keeps it clear and doesn't clutter the back ground up with visual distractions.

The lighting of the image works well because these no strong shadows on the face and it's pretty evenly lit but then more dynamic lighting comes in further down the image and on the other two people in the image, also the contraste between the peson at the front and the two at the back adds to the hole The Good The Bad and The Ugly feel of the image because the lighting and out fit for the person at the front makes him look brighter where as the two at the bak are dressed in darker clothes and theres less lighting making them look more menacing. The angel of the image also works well being face one to the main subject, if it had been to one side i feel it would have made the image have less impact on the viewer.

To do this image they used a studio for the white back drop, because of how old the fim is it was done on ether a 35mm film camera and maybe even a medium format camer for the quality for the posters, the camer would would have been placed in front of him on a tripod most probably, lens wise I'm not sure maybe a 50mm lens I'm not sure what lenses you can get for medium format cameras, lighting there was probably a soft box just to the right of him then they used the over spilling light to light the back two people, then to make sure the the front guy is evenly lit a reflector would have been used, he dose also have a well tanned and slightly gold look about him that could be natural or they used a gold cover for the reflector to give him a tanned look.

If I were do do this image I mite consider using film to get and old look or and DSLR, I would use a film with a higher ISO or put it up on my digital camera to add a bit of grain in there, I woud use a white back drop because it works really well but I probably would experiment with different back drops, I would use a 50mm lens so I could get all the people in then if've I needed I could just crop it down, then I would try the lighting that I suggested they used for the original just to see how close I was then I would also try out some different lighting angels for different styles, I would also try some different angels with the camera to just to see if anything else works or if what they used is the best angels to use.

final images

For this assignment we were asked to take travel photography images from the place were we went, one of them place was Llandudno and I feel that I got my best images from there.
I have chosen these three for my final images because I feel they were the best out of all of them, I took the first one inside the car when we had just parked, and where looking out over the sea and were eating the bacon and cheese sandwiches, I feel this works for travel photography because it shows the travelling aspect of travel instead of just where you're going to end up.
The second image I took down on a little jetty type thing looking over at the pier, This image works for travel because Llandudno pier is quite well known and is recognisable, and I also think that the rocks in the fore ground helps add depth to the image.
Then my last image I took whilst on the pier and is looking over at the Little Orme across the bay, I feel this one works for travel because it's a good image of the sea side, and also because it's the Little Orme could be used to advertise Llandudno
